Passports
The Rutherford County Library (Callahan Koon Road location only) is a Passport Acceptance Facility.
Passport applications accepted by appointment only.
The Rutherford County Library System is pleased to accept passport applications on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. U.S. Citizens planning international travel may apply for their passports by calling the library at 828-287-6115 and pressing option 2 to make an appointment with a passport agent.
Please be aware that passports are taking much longer than normal to process. Current wait times can be found by visiting the US Department of State website.
What To Bring
All applicants, including children, must be present at the time of the appointment.
Children ages birth to 15 must have both parents listed on their birth certificate present. In the event that one parent cannot be present, Form DS-3053 must be completed and notarized prior to your visit, along with a photocopy of the back and front of the non-appearing parent’s valid photo identification. Form DS-5525 can be filled out if you have special family circumstances. Young adults ages 16 and 17 only need one parent present.
Please be sure to have the following when coming to the library:
- Separate payments (checks or money orders only) for the Rutherford County Library and the U.S. Department of State.
- At least one form of proof of citizenship (original, no photocopies):
- Birth certificate
- Naturalization certificate
- Previous U.S. passport
- Permanent resident card (required for the child of a naturalized parent)
- Photo identification (e.g. state-issued Driver’s License or Photo ID card) for applicants 16 and older.
- A completed and unsigned application form (DS-11) filled out in black ink. This form may be picked up in advance at the library or filled out and printed from US Department of State website.
- One passport photo. The library does not offer passport photo services. You can have these taken at local businesses such as CVS, Walmart, Walgreens, and the UPS Store.
Please be aware that some situations may require additional documentation (adoptions, foreign births, name changes other than marriage, etc). Check with a passport agent before making your appointment.
